Winter Weather Land
This week our theme is all about winter time. We will learn that:
- The weather affects our world and us.
- Weather is different all around the world on the same day.
- Wind is moving air and can feel warm or cold.
- Sometimes the weather is rainy and the rain is part of the water cycle.
- Snow is a sign of winter in some countries.
- Animals change their behaviour in winter and sometimes hibernate.
- People have to wear different clothes in winter to keep warm.
- Water changes its state due to temperature.
- Plants change over the winter season, some plants stay green and these are called evergreen.
Activities:
- Talk to your grown-up about winter. What activities do we do in the summer? What activities do we do in the winter? Make comparisons.
- Talk to your grown-up about what clothes we wear in the winter.
- Explore the winter book, video and activity on espresso:

- Make a winter picture. It could be you dressed in your winter clothes, it could be a snowy picture or it could be a windy, rainy picture!
Storytime
This week's stories are...
One Winter's Day
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBKfbo60jlI
- What was Hedgehog building at the beginning of the story?
- What was the weather like in the story?
- What clothes did Hedgehog wear to keep warm?
- What animals did Hedgehog see on the way to Badger's house?
- Who did Hedgehog give his wooly hat to and why?
- What words would you use to describe Hedgehog?
Little Robin Red Vest
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x577ltc
- Retell the story to a grown-up.
- How many vests did Little Robin have?
- What animals did Little Robin meet?
- Why did he give his vests away?
- Who rescued Little Robin?
- What words would you use to describe what Little Robin is like?
Writing
When you have listened to the story 'Little Robin Red Vest', draw a picture of something that happened in the story and then write a sentence for your picture. e.g. Little Robin gave his pink vest to mole.
Remember to:
- Say the word that you are going to write.
- Listen for the sounds in order.
- Write down the sounds that you can hear.
- Put a finger space between each word.
- Put a full stop at the end of your sentence.
Grown-ups: Your child might only hear 1 or 2 sounds in each word. That is fine. Encourage your child to listen for the sounds and just write down the sounds that they can hear.
Name Writing
- Practise writing your name every day.
Phonics
The home learning letter we sent out before the holidays will tell you what group your child is in for phonics. Please let us know if you need a new letter.
We are learning to read and write a different letter each day:
Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | |
Group A | h | r | j | v | y |
Group B | v | y | w | z | x |
Group C | ch | sh | th | ng | qu |
Watch the video on espresso about the letter.
Now tell your grown-up some words that start with today's sound. Finally have a go at writing the letter a few times.
Grown-ups: Every day, revisit the previous sounds that they have learnt.
Maths
