Theme - What's on the Menu?

This week we will continue with our theme 'What's on the Menu?'. We will be learning about the importance of eating a healthy, balanced diet. The children will learn that:

  • Our bodies need food for energy and good health.
  • Breads and cereals are important for nutrition.
  • Fruit and vegetables are important for nutrition.
  • Dairy and protein are needed for nutrition.
  • Bodies need small amounts of fats and sugar to stay healthy.
  • Food is sold at shops and markets.
  • Food is sorted into categories in the supermarkets.
  • Recipes can be followed to make lots of different meals.

Think of something that happened in 'Handa's Surprise'. e.g. "The monkey took the banana".

Write your sentence.

Remember to:

  • Say the word that you are going to write.
  • Listen for the sounds in order.
  • Write down the sounds that you can hear.
  • Put a finger space between each word.
  • Put a full stop at the end of your sentence.

Name Writing

Phonics

The home learning letter we sent out before the holidays will tell you what group your child is in for phonics. Please let us know if you need a new letter.

We are learning to read and write a different letter each day:

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday
Group A u b f e l
Group B sh ch th ng qu
Group C ch ck th sh ng

Watch the video on espresso about the letter.

https://central.espresso.co.uk/espresso/primary_uk/subject/module/frontscreen/item61932/grade1/index.html?source=search-all-all-all-all&source-keywords=scraps

Now tell your grown-up some words that start with today's sound. Finally have a go at writing the letter a few times.

Grown-ups: Every day, revisit the previous sounds that they have learnt.

Maths

Counting Activities (Please do at least one counting activity every day)

  • I can count to 20 song with actions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VLxWIHRD4E
  • Rally Robin counting to 20. (Adult and child face each other. Adult says 1, child says 2, adult says 3, child says 4 and so on until you get to 20)
  • Every time you go upstairs, count the steps. Remember to say 1 number name for each step.
  • Counting actions. Jump 10 times and count as you do it.

Activity 1

When you have listened to the story 'The Shopping Basket', make a picture of the different items on the list (6 eggs, 5 bananas, 4 apples, 3 oranges, 2 doughnuts and 1 packet of crisps). Draw the correct number of items and write the numeral next to them.

Activity 2

This week we are learning to find the number 1 less than a given number. We can do this with songs:

  • 5 little ducks
  • 5 currant buns
  • 5 little men in a flying saucer
  • 5 little speckled frogs

Listen to the songs on BBC Bitesize. https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/nursery-rhymes-counting-songs/zn67kmn

You could make your own resources. Make pictures of 5 buns or make them out of playdough and then practise singing 5 currant buns to your grown-up.

Vocabulary: take away, less, how many are left?
