Week 7 - Week Beginning 12th October 2020
Name Writing
- Practise writing your name everyday.
Phonics
We are learning to read and write a different letter each day:
Monday - m
Tuesday - a
Wednesday - s
Thursday - d
Friday - t
Watch the video on espresso about the letter.
Now tell your grown-up some words that start with today's sound. Finally have a go at writing the letter a few times.
Grown-ups: Every day, revisit the previous sounds that they have learnt.
Topic
This week our theme is 'From Head to Toe'. This theme will explore all of the amazing things our body can do. This week we are thinking about our 5 senses.
- We see with our eyes.
- We hear with our ears.
- We smell with our noses.
- We taste with our tongue.
- We touch with our skin.
Activities:
- Feely bag/box. Ask your grown up to put an item in a box or bag. Without looking, feel inside with your hands. Can you guess what it is? Repeat this with a few items. Use some words describe what the items feel like. (soft, hard, smooth, spiky, furry)
- Put a blindfold on. Ask your grown-up to feed something to you. Can you guess what it is without looking? Use some words to describe the taste (sweet, spicy, sour)
- What smells can you smell around your house? It might be somebody cooking tea or baking a cake. It might be somebodies perfume or aftershave. What smells do you like/dislike?
- Listen to the different sounds on this video. Can you guess what the sounds are? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0Kp_J9kvNM
- Watch the videos on espresso about our senses. https://central.espresso.co.uk/espresso/modules/ey_sing_pretend/videos/video_senses.html?source=search-all-all-all-all&source-keywords=senses
Book:
- Peace at Last https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9U9y35kWBvM - What sounds stopped Mr Bear from getting to sleep? - Draw a picture of something that happened in the story. It could be a picture of Mr Bear trying to sleep in the garden. Now write some labels on the picture. You could label 'bear', 'hedgehog', 'cat'. Focus on listening for the initial and final sounds in the words and form the letters. -Extension: Write a sentence about something that happened in the story. For example, 'The clock went tick tock'.
Remember to:
- Say your sentence to your grown-up.
- Sound out each word carefully.
- Write the letters down in sequence.
- Put a finger space between each word.
- Put a full stop at the end of your sentence.
Maths
Counting Activities (Please do at least one counting activity every day)
- I can count to 20 song with actions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VLxWIHRD4E
- Rally Robin counting to 20. (Adult and child face each other. Adult says 1, child says 2, adult says 3, child says 4 and so on until you get to 20)
- Every time you go upstairs, count the steps. Remember to say 1 number name for each step.
- Counting actions. Jump 10 times and count as you do it.
This week, we are learning to say the number 1 more or 1 less than a given number.
Vocabulary: more, less, add, take away, how many?
1 more activities:
- Listen to the one elephant song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAangIPkQ8A
- Get some coins or counters. Put 4 in a line. If you add 1 more, how many will you have? Repeat with a few numbers within 10. When you are confident at doing this within 10, extend to within 20.
1 less activities:
- Get some coins or counters. Put 4 in a line. If you take 1 away (have 1 less), how many will you have? Repeat with a few numbers within 10. When you are confident at doing this within 10, extend to within 20.
- Listen to some rhymes on BBC Bitesize that help us to think about '1 less'. https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/nursery-rhymes-counting-songs/zn67kmn - 5 Little Ducks - 5 Little Speckled Frogs - 5 Little Men in a Flying Saucer - 5 Currant Buns
Grown-ups: By the end of the week, after lots of practise using counting resources and listening to rhymes, encourage your child to say the number 1 more or 1 less than a number by working it out in their head.
