Be The Best You Can Be

Previous Years Work

2020-21

Independent Learning

Throughout the week, the children complete 4 independent challenges in both writing and maths. This is an opportunity for them to develop and apply new skills.

Take a look at some of the fantastic independent work Year 1 have completed!

Eid 2020

Year 1 learnt all about Ramadan and how Muslims celebrate Eid.

To celebrate, we created our own prayer mats and talked about how they would be used during Eid celebrations.

We also talked about what our prayer mats could look like and made sure they were bright and colourful and full of patterns!

Pretty Plants

The children have got stuck in to our 'Pretty Plants' topic and have enjoyed planting their own sunflower seeds. We have looked at what plants need in order to grow and looked at the different parts of the plant and why they are important.

We even went on a plant walk around our school grounds to see what types of plant we could see and if we could identify any of the flowers we saw.

Healthy Me!

This half term in PSHE we are looking at 'Healthy Me' and why it is important to stay healthy. We discussed all the ways we can look after ourselves and talked about the importance of washing our hands to get rid of all the germs that are on them.

We then did an experiment using water, pepper and soap. The pepper was acting as the germs and we wanted to find out what happens to the germs when we use soap to wash our hands.

We found out that when we dipped our finger into the water with no soap, all the germs stuck to our finger. However, when we did it again, this time with soap on our finger, none of the germs got on our fingers because the soap dispersed them all!

Map Work

In Geography this half term, we are looking at the UK and our local area. We looked at a map of the area around school and discussed what we could see on the map. We learnt that maps have symbols instead of pictures or words so we can see what is in the area easily.

We then looked at the map of our local area again and looked for all the symbols on the map and worked as a team to guess what they mean.

We then used the map to plot our routes from our homes to school before planning a route from school to Boggart Hole Clough.

Welcome Back Week

To welcome the children back into school, we did lots of activities focusing on working as a team and promoting positive mental health.

For one activity, we thought about what makes a good friend and how we could be good friends before making our own friendship paper dolls.

We also read the story 'The World Made a Rainbow!' and worked together to create our own rainbow. Each table had a different colour of the rainbow which the children painted before adding different items of that colour. It looks amazing!

Then we did lots of independent challenges and got very creative.

Take a look out our amazing 'welcome back' work below!

Spaceships

At the start of term, an alien wrote Year 1 a letter asking us to help him to build a stronger spaceship. We investigated materials to see what the strongest and most waterproof material is and then designed and made our own spaceships.

We thought about the best way to join and decorate our spaceships and we are so pleased with the results!
